Svolt has signed a deal to supply Stellantis, which includes the Chrysler, Citroën, Fiat, Opel and Peugeot brands, with lithium ion batteries from China from 2025, from battery cells and high-voltage storage systems to battery management systems. It will initially use its production capacities in China and future production capacities in Europe.

Stellantis will use two battery chemistries to support various customer needs: a high energy-density option and a nickel cobalt-free alternative and plans 130 GWh of capacity by 2025 and 260 GWh by 2030. Svolt will be part of that supply alongside ACC, the Stellantis joint venture with Total that is planning gigafactories in France and Germany.

Svolt says its NMx cobalt-free battery chemistry rivals a traditional NCM811 cell in performance, while reducing the cost of materials by 5 to 15 percent and the cell cost by around 5 percent.

“We are very pleased to have won such a renowned customer like Stellantis for our high-quality lithium-ion batteries and battery systems and to be able to supply them with batteries in the future,” said Maxim Hantsch-Kramskoj, Vice President Sales & Marketing SVOLT Europe.

Svolt announced €2bn plans for a 24GWh plant in Europe back iin 2019 but has still not announced a location. It also plans a factory to make cathode materials and a battery technology centre in the region.
