Using a single inductor, multiple output (SIMO) architecture can halve the footprint of the power management in wearable and Internet of Things (IoT) designs.
The MAX77654 SIMO PMIC provides three outputs with one inductor at an efficiency of 91 per cent, boosting battery life by 20 per cent.
The SIMO PMIC replaces three buck-boost converters and three inductors with a single converter and a single inductor. It also replaces two LDOs or load-switches, a battery charger and additional passives, resulting in the 50 per cent footprint reduction.
With a shutdown current of 500nA and a low supply current of 6µA with 5 regulators operating, designers can add more functions to ultra-low-power consumer wearable devices. The MAX77654 yields lower heat dissipation and reduces system board temperature by more than 20 degrees Celsius when compared against an alternative single inductor system power solution. Additionally, this SIMO PMIC provides superior output voltage ripple performance of less than 20mVp-p for noise sensitive rails.
All of this leads to a 40 per cent reduction in components and 23 per cent lower BOM cost compared to discrete solutions.
