Power chip developer Silanna Semiconductor is developing its own controller chip for the USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) protocol and working on a USB charger design that will fit into an existing wall outlet
Having its own USB-PD controller chip will put the company in competition with Infineon who’s Cypress chip is widely used, as well as Chinese supplier Weltrends.
“We have a future roadmap to offer our own PD controller for end to end,” said Ahsan Zaman director of marketing for AC-DC at Silanna. “We really think we will have something to demonstrate by the end of the year for customers."

Last month the company launched an AC-DC ‘systemin-package’ to simplify the design of chargers and cut the no load power consumption, a key consideration for wall socket designs that are effectively ‘always on’.
A USB charger with multiple outlets as a drop in replacement for existing power sockets is a multi-billion dollar market and opens up the potential for adding sensors and powerline data connections for smart homes and offices. However this needs a smaller design with low standby power and a low thermal profile.
“We have a couple of active products for outlets wall plug adaptors,” said Zaman.
