3D printing battery startup Sakuu has teamed up with Honeywell and Resolution to start construction of a pilot line for solid state batteries at its headquarters in San Jose, California. Completion of the line and R&D centre is expected by the end of the year.
The pilot line will have the capability to produce up to 2.5 MWh per year of its KeraCel solid-state batteries and in the future will also serve as a customer learning centre for its advanced additive manufacturing platform.
The Sakuú solid-state batteries will be up to half the size and two thirds the weight of today’s lithium-ion batteries and much less expensive to produce in high volume.

Sakuú, based in San Jose, California, is working with Relevant Industrial and Honeywell Process Solutions on the design and development of the pilot line to demonstrate the viability of the battery manufacturing process and enable Sakuú to deliver sample products to its Early Access strategic partners. Relevant and Honeywell will help take Sakuu’s proprietary technology and scale up the lab environment into a fully functioning pilot manufacturing plant.
The second phase is expected to follow in 2022, using a range of Sakuú AM Platforms for 3D printing to mass produce solid state batteries with up to 1 GWh of capacity per year.
