A robust Schottky diode is key to allow a wide range of electronic subsystems to be implemented in oxide-based flexible electronics, including: DC and RF rectification, voltage regulation, sample and hold circuitry and electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection, PragmatIC said.
Abhishek Chandramohan, device development engineer at PragmatIC, presented the device at the Innovations in Large-Area Electronics conference held in Cambridge last week. The first implementation of this functionality will be in products within the PragmatIC ConnectIC range of flexible integrated circuits (FlexICs), which are being pitched at low-cost smart consumer items and packaging.
The Schottky diode is also key to PragmatIC’s FlexIC foundry services that enable third-party FlexIC design based on PragmatIC's process design kit.
The PDK is based on an industry-standard Electronic Design Automation (EDA) toolflow; it includes a core device library, simulation models, design rules, and a growing library of standard cells to facilitate design and footprint optimisation.
Companies working with PragmatIC on the FlexIC foundry approach include ARM, Cambridge Consultants Ltd., IMEC and Productivity Engineering GmbH. ARM is working to develop a machine learning chip for recognizing odour on a flexible substrate. IMEC has designed RFID integrated circuits.
