Nissan sues Italian battery maker

Nissan Motor is suing Italian battery maker Fiamm  for €122m over faulty batteries, reports Bloomberg.

The case against Fiamm Energy Technology in London claims faulty starter batteries hit 900,000 Qashqai and Juke models built in the UK.

The issue appears to be around the Battery Management System (BMS). Fiamm says the batteries were manufactured to specification and the issue lies with the BMS

The case highlights the importance of battery manufacturing after Nissan announced a battery gigafactory to be built by AESC Envision alongside its factory in the UK for electric vehicles.

The problems with the vehicles stopped when Nissan switched to starter batteries from Johnson Controls International, but FIAMM said this was because Nissan later optimized its system for JCI’s batteries.
