MPEG LA has launched a Patent Portfolio License for the Qi Wireless Power. This provides one-stop access to several of the patents covering the Qi standard for wireless charging and power transfer developed by the Wireless Power Consortium.

The initial patent owners to MPEG LA’s Qi Wireless Power Patent Portfolio License are ConvenientPower in Hong Kong, GE Hybrid Technologies, Philips and Robert Bosch.

“Just as Qi makes mobile products more mobile by removing wires from wireless devices, MPEG LA is pleased to make Qi technology readily available to the worldwide market on the same terms under an efficient and affordable license,” said Larry Horn, CEO and president of MPEG LA, which started out licensing groups of video compression patents and has since expanded into other areas such as display patents.

“We commend these companies for their foresight, initiative and cooperation in making possible a joint license under their foundational patents for the benefit of the Qi marketplace,” said Bill Geary, MPEG LA Vice President, Business Development, “and we welcome other owners of technology covered by the Qi standard to join them in offering one-stop access through MPEG LA’s Qi License.”

As with the video patents, MPEG LA’s objective is to offer worldwide access to as many Qi Wireless Power essential patents as possible to everyone on the same terms under a single license. So the organisation says it welcomes any party that believes it has patents that are essential to the Qi Wireless Power standard. These patents can be submitted for an evaluation of whether they are essential to the Qi standard and possible inclusion in the License. Interested Qi Wireless Power patent owners may request a copy of the terms and procedures governing patent submissions here.
