Ilika’s mm-scale battery, code-named Golden Hind, is designed for miniature medical implants, which will be around half the company’s licensing business.

The cells are built on standard semiconductor industry wafers using Ilika’s proprietary vacuum deposition technique. The cells are etched from the materials deposited on the wafer and singulated using standard industry back-end processing techniques. lIika has developed the materials and process technologies to make these cells on its pilot line in Southampton, UK and to align with customer demands.

Shipments have now commenced to global OEM commercial partners in the USA and Asia, developing mass-market medical products that benefit from the unique properties of these cells including mm-scale dimensions, intrinsically-safe solid-state biocompatibility and long lifecycle.

Golden Hind prototypes are currently undergoing parallel evaluation at Ilika’s facility to fully qualify the cells for a product launch in early 2019.

The Golden Hind product is the latest in the Stereax product portfolio that includes the M250 for smart home automation and the P180 for deployments at temperatures up to 150 ºC in industrial environments.
