250fF TVS clamp protects USB Type-C interfaces

A transient voltage suppression TVS device developed by Semtech has a maximum capacitance of just 250 femtofarads to protect a high speed USB Type-C interface.

The RClamp3371ZC exceeds industry immunity standards for robustness while only presenting 250 fF of maximum loading capacitance. The low clamping, ultra-low capacitance TVS device protects high speed interfaces, such as USB Type-C, from common ESD threats.

As high-speed transceiver chips on ever-shrinking silicon geometries become increasingly sensitive to transient voltage spikes, the need for high performance protection circuitry is even more critical. These chips require ultra-low clamping voltage protection while also presenting a minimal loading capacitance. This TVS uses Semtech’s FemtoClamp technology to achieve the low capacitance with the highest performance ESD protection for high speed data communication channels. This allows the RClamp3371ZC to fit into a 0201 surface mount package measuring 0.62 x 0.32 x 0.25mm. This gives board designers key space savings and a high degree of layout flexibility.

The RClamp3371ZC TVS gives transient protection for high speed data lines to IEC 61000-4-2 (ESD) ±17kV (air), ±10kV (contact), IEC 61000-4-4 (EFT) 40A (5/50ns) and IEC 61000-4-5 (lightning) 9A (8/20μs) with a 3.3V working voltage protection.The surge capability is 9A (tp=8/20μs) with a capacitance under 0.25 pF.
