The first prototype vehicle to result from “VISION-S” design was shown at the CES show in las Vegas today for the first time.
Alongside a skateboard chassis with a low battery pack, the electric vehicle prototype use Sony’s imaging and sensing technologies. These include on-board software regulated using Sony’s AI, 5G telecommunication and cloud technologies. It has a total of 33 sensors including CMOS image sensors and ToF sensors are embedded within the vehicle, in order to detect and recognize people and objects inside and outside the car.
The two 200kW motors provide four wheel drive and a top speed of 149 mph (240 km/h).
Sony hasn’t given the capacity of the battery pack or the range of the platform. Sony sold off its battery manufacturing business that makes the lithium ion cells for electric vehicles packs to Murata Manufacturing in September 2017. There’s also no sign of a photovoltaic sun roof to provide more power to the battery pack and extend the driving range.
