FTDI Chip in Glasgow, Scotland, has launched a single channel USB-C PD power delivery interface chip to complete its line of industrial devices.
The FT23xHP series is supplied in a QFN package that simulataneously supports a single data channel with 100W of power for designs that are limited in space or budgets. Using USB-C PD as a port allows data rates at 480Mbits/s rates without any interruption being experienced should the direction of power flow change as the system shifts from a source into a sink, or vice-versa.
The Type-C/PD controller in the device is designed to revision 3.0 of the USB power delivery specification, enabling power transfers up to 100W, and handles the negotiating and power level detection activities prior to the supply being initiated, avoiding the need to use the system microcontroller.
As the part is aimed at industrial designs the family supports different I/O options including RS232, RS422, RS485, JTAG, I2C and SPI.
The FT23xHP follows the dual-channel FT223xHP and quad-channel FT423xHP devices launched last year and are now in volume production.
All three USB power delivery devices supplied by FTDI Chip are able to deal with operating temperatures from -40°C to 85°C for industrial designs such as barcode scanners, test equipment, industrial automation hardware, computer peripherals, power tools and lighting systems.
The company is based in Glasgow, UK with research and development facilities in Glasgow, Singapore and Taipei, Taiwan and regional sales and technical support sites in Glasgow, Taipei, Tigard (Oregon, USA) and Shanghai (China).
