PWM control for coil relay families slash power consumption
Omron Electronic Components Europe has launched three of its most popular power relay families with pulse width modulation (PWM) control to cut the coil power to 75 to 90 percent of its standard versions.
The G2RL, G5Q and G5NB relay families now support PWM control of the coil holding current which reduces the duty cycle and average current. This cuts the both the power consumption and the heat developed in the relay, improving efficiency and reliability by reducing thermal load, especially for banks of relays.
This allows more traditional coil relays to fight back against solid state relays.
The high capacity 16A G2RL-PW1 is a low profile power relay with a height of 15.7mm and a coil power consumption of 120mW, compared to 400mW for the standard version.
The miniature SPDT G5Q-PW has a 10A switching capacity with a coil power consumption of 36mW using the PWM control, compared to 400mW for the standard version.
The G5NB-PW is a single pole, 3A / 5A relay with a 10kV impulse withstand voltage that has a coil power consumption of 32mW, compared to 200mW for the standard model.
All three families are optionally available in IEC/EN 60335-1 conformant versions.
