Marvell boosts CXL business with Tanzanite buy
Marvell is buying US startup Tanzanite Silicon Solutions to integrate into its CXL platform for Cloud Data Centres.
Tanzanite is a leading developer of Compute Express Link (CXL) technologies which are increasingly popular for memory interfaces in data centre designs alongside the latest PCIexpress technologies.
Existing server architectures face multiple memory scaling challenges and lack the ability to share memory resources efficiently. Workloads such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), analytics, and large-scale search are driving the need for more memory performance. CXL has been increasingly popular for connecting processors, accelerators and memory in new cloud data centre architectures with the ability to instantly allocate resources tailored to workloads.

Tanzanite’s TanzanoidZ architecture and purpose-built design of a “Smart Logic Interface Connector” (SLICT) SoC enables independent scaling and sharing of memory and compute in a pool with low latency within and across server racks. This provides a highly scalable architecture for exa-scale level memory capacity and compute acceleration, supporting multiple industry standard form-factors, ranging from E1.S, E3.S, memory expansion board, and memory appliance.

Marvell is positioning itself as an end-to-end supplier of 5nm silicon for the data centre, with active electrical cable (AEC) PAM4 DSPs and Ethernet PHYs, SSD and HDD controllers, PAM4 electro-optics, Octeon data processor units (DPUs), Ethernet switches, custom ARM-based server CPUs and full custom ASICs.
