Faradion in Sheffield, UK, has signed a deal with an Indian fleet provider for sodium battery packs for commercial electric vehicles.
The partnership with Infraprime Logistics Technologies (IPLTech) for the high energy sodium battery technology addresses the growing appetite for commercial electric vehicles, driven by the government’s target of 30 percent electric vehicle adoption by 2030. This has led to a $1.4 trillion backing for infrastructure projects in India to be invested by 2025, compaed to $35bn in the UK and $500bn in the US. Each day, 40km of highways are constructed in India and the market for roads and highways is projected to grow at an annual rate of 36 percen from now to 2025.
Unlike lithium-ion batteries, Faradion‘s sodium battery technology has higher thermal stability and safety and can be safely transported and maintained at zero volts.
“We are driven to minimise the heavy pollution caused by heavy goods vehicles in India. Our full electric mega trucks are the first of their kind to be integrated and deployed in India. We believe that the Faradion technology can provide the Indian market an effective solution at competitive prices,” said Siddhartha Das, Executive Chairman of IPLTech.
The IPLTech trucks use a 265 kWh battery pack that weighs two tonnes with an in-built air-conditioned secondary cooling system to maintain temperature around each cell at below 35 ºC even when ambient temperature climbs above 50 ºC. The company is rolling out a network of 160kW fast chargers for the trucks.
Faradion has seen significant interest in several markets, including the US, Europe and Australia, and India was is the next logical region, says James Quinn, CEO of Faradion. “Faradion is accelerating large scale industrialisation of its safe, low cost, sodium-ion energy storage technology. The partnership with IPLTech reflects an important milestone in our commitment to the market and the Prime Minister’s Make In India vision, as we also shortly commence manufacturing in India,” he said.
