Synopsys: Saving Power in a UFS Implementation Leveraging MIPI M-PHY and UniPro

The JEDEC Universal Flash Storage (UFS) has become the mobile storage standard of choice for today's high-end smartphones and tablets mainly due to the specification's performance and power advantages over other existing solutions. Keeping the power dissipation low while maintaining the expected performance becomes a key challenge for mobile storage IC designers. UFS is designed to help overcome this challenge as it uses the MIPI M-PHY specification for its physical interconnect layer and MIPI UniPro specification for its data transmission (or link) layer. This white paper describes how UFS leverages MIPI M-PHY and UniPro specifications to save power by determining the safest time to gate the reference clock in a UFS implementation.
