With the planned establishment of a public-private joint venture between the Bolivian state enterprise Yacimientos de Litio Bolivianos (YLB) and the German ACI Systems Alemania GmbH (ACISA), Germany is to gain access to the raw material. ACISA’s customers include Siemens, Continental, BMW, IBM, Tesla, First Solar, Bosch and the Fraunhofer research company.

Bolivia will be responsible for the industrialization of the lithium and will enable the development of the economy by exploiting the world’s largest lithium deposit at Salar de Uyuni.

The foundation of the JV employs the highest government circles in the two countries. Bolivia’s President Joan Evo Morals Ayma and other ministers will travel to Berlin on 12 December to officially sign the contract. Germany will be represented by its Economics Minister Peter Altmaier, among others.

The German partner in the joint venture is ACI Systems Alemania, a member of the ACI Group (Zimmern ob Rottweil). The group deals with production solutions for the photovoltaic, battery and automotive industries. It is involved in the development of applications for the production of battery systems, energy storage and generators for electric mobility and solar power plants, as well as in the extraction of raw materials and materials for these industries. According to the company, the core competencies of the group are process and plant engineering for production lines and automation solutions.
