Dual metal ion battery approaches performance of supercapacitors

Raphael Trocoli and his colleagues at the IREC institute in Barcelona, Spain, developed a dual metal ion cell that uses LiMn2O4, zinc and an aqueous electrolyte. This provides a specific power density similar to electrochemical supercapacitors around 3400 W/kg, compared to 100 Wh/kg for current lithium ion cells.
The design also has high levels of stability with a very limited degradation (99.94 % capacity retention per cycle) after 300 cycles. All these features, together with the intrinsic safe nature of the technology, will have a significant impact on miniature systems, say the team in a paper for the Applied Materials and Interfaces journal at pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acsami.7b08883
