To be completed by winter 2018, the 49 megawatt (MW) lithium-ion system will respond to fluctuations in electrical demand in less than a second.

The battery plant will be built at the site of the former Roosecote coal and gas-fired power stations in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, UK, and will be owned and operated by energy operator Centrica. Younicos software will be key to ensuring that the system meets the various demanding requirements set by the UK Transmission System Operator (TSO).

The manufacturer of the batteries is not being disclosed. “We work with all the leading manufacturers,” said a spokesperson. “We have a dedicated lithium ion testing lab in Berlin where we regularly test the quality of lithium ion batteries and assess the usability for different use cases. Building on that we have established strong relationships with manufacturers.”

Younicos develops the control system software to smooth out short-term fluctuations in power supply and demand quickly and precisely, enabling the integration of a much larger share of intermittent clean energy sources.

The company pioneered the commercial use of batteries to provide various critical grid services such as frequency regulation, and has already installed over 150 MW of battery storage globally, building Europe’s first commercial battery in Schwerin, Germany, and providing the software and controls for UK Power Network’s 6 MW “Smarter Network Storage” (SNS) project in Leighton-Buzzard.

“What we do is software and controls that will work with any electrochemical technologies,” said the spokesperson “You want an asset that delivers returns over its life of ten to fifteen years. As markets evolve you may want to tap into different use cases, but how you use the asset impacts its lifetime differently. That’s where it becomes a bit tricky and you need to make sure you have the right software that allows you to switch use cases without loosing lifetime.”
